Artist's Comments

Smudge, Dodge and Burn: Three enemies to the amateur digital artist.

Why are they so bad?

Smudge: Produces waxy, smeary or look. Kills texture. More noticeably in skin tones; skin is supposed to be soft and textured, but smudge makes it look like plastic.

Dodge and Burn: Don't give realistic shadows and highlights. It's better to just select a darker/lighter colour.

These tools can be used effectively (especially, in the case of Smudge, if you change its default settings). But only if you have knowledge of how they work, and under what situations they are hazardous.

Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one Ball:
And tear our pleasures with rough strife,
Through the Iron gates of Life:
Thus, though we cannot make our Sun
Stand still, yet we shall make him run.
